AI Artwork for Print – Why It Doesn’t Always Work (and What to Do About It)

AI-generated artwork is everywhere right now and for good reason. It’s quick, creative, and can produce some really impressive visuals in seconds. Whether it’s for posters, flyers, or social media, it’s a great tool to get ideas moving fast.
But here’s the thing,
what looks amazing on your screen doesn’t always print the way you expect.
It Looks Sharp on Screen… Until You Print It
Most AI tools create images that are meant for digital use. That means they’re built for screens phones, laptops, websites where resolution is much lower.
On screen, images are usually around 72 DPI, which is absolutely fine digitally. But for print, you need 300 DPI to get that sharp, professional finish.
So when you take an AI-generated image and send it straight to print, you can end up with something that looks:
Blurry
Pixelated
Soft or lacking detail
Even though it looked perfectly crisp before.
Sizing Is Another Big Issue
AI tools don’t usually create artwork to standard print sizes like A4, A5, or business cards. They just generate images in pixel dimensions.
That becomes a problem when you try to resize them for print.
If you scale them up, the quality drops. If you try to force them into a specific size, things can get stretched, cropped, or just look off. Text and important details can end up in the wrong place, especially if bleed and margins haven’t been considered.
Colour Can Catch You Out Too
Another thing people don’t realise is that screens and print use completely different colour systems.
Screens = RGB
Print = CMYK
AI artwork is usually created in RGB, so when it’s printed, colours can shift sometimes quite noticeably. Bright colours can look duller, and certain tones just won’t match what you saw on screen.
So What Should You Do?
If you’re using AI artwork for print, it just needs a bit of prep before it’s ready to go.
Here’s the basics:
Make sure the file is set up at 300 DPI
Size it correctly for what you’re printing
Convert colours from RGB to CMYK
Check bleed and margins if needed
Don’t rely on scaling up a small image it won’t hold quality
Or, the easiest option get it checked professionally.
Final Thoughts
AI is a brilliant tool, no doubt about it. But it doesn’t automatically produce print-ready files.
A design can look spot on on your screen, but without the right setup, the printed version can be a completely different story.
If you’re ever unsure, it’s always worth getting your artwork checked before printing. It can save you time, money, and a lot of frustration check out our how to supply files page and make sure the final result looks exactly how you want it to.
